Dominique’s Doula Testimony for Freda:
He was due June 19th. After losing my mucus plug and feeling the pressure of him
descending, I was certain that he would be right on time. It wasn’t until the first seven days
passed and then the second that I began to feel exhaustion, frustration, and fear. Without the
support of my doula, the birth of my baby would have likely happened prematurely, erratically, and with me misinformed. Though this was my third child, this was the first time I felt safe during the delivery of my baby. I was informed of what was happening in my body, what signs to look for, how I could best bring him into this world, and most importantly that I had someone who would go to bat and advocate for me in the moments of labor where it can feel like slight delirium and the height of overwhelm, pain, and fatigue, My doula was an angel for me. The day of my son’s birth, the nursing staff made snide comments about me being 42 weeks and 6 days pregnant upon my entry. A group of foreign white staff of about 10 people stormed my room while I was pushing, I’m guessing in the case they had to do an emergency caesarean. However, this wasn’t my experience because of my angel. I wish I’d had the financial resources and knowledge to advocate for a doula with my first two pregnancies. Having one taught me
the necessity of calmness and patience with birth and babies as well as for mamas. My doula was my angel
and having her in my life changed not only my birthing experience, but the way I navigate my world
and stand as the angel in my home to my babies.
